We know it runs like a normal air conditioner in the cooling season, but when we get into heating season, some extra components come into play and we get confused or lose track of the sequence of operation for a heat pump. Thanks for your help. There’s something mystical when it comes to the heat pump system. eliminating the need to cap a white wire? The run of the wire is approx. Do I still need the same cable with 4 wires and cap the white wire, or can I get same size but with only 3 wires. I was advised that I can get the same wire from a local home improvement store but ask for 6AWG. Question: I am very handy and have run wire to my breaker box before. The tech that came out stated that the breaker is tripping because 1) the system is getting older and 2) the heat pump was drawing too much during this cold weather which was tripping the breaker. They are not giving me any option, even though they botched the job. The white wire is capped (not being used). I opened up the unit and saw that the current cabling has 4 wires (red, black, neutral, and white). That wire was labeled 3C 600V 8AWG NM w/Ground. When they installed the new unit they used the same wire from my old Trane unit. They want to charge for the new breaker and running new wire? The installing came out, they confirmed that they should have upgraded the 50 amp to a 60 amp, but stated that my warranty expired for the "labor", and they needed to charge for the job. They told me to the call the installing company. They took a look and noted that the system had a 60 amp breaker, but the breaker in the box was only 50 amp. I set up an apt with my usual HVAC company. During this winter, my system started to trip the circuit breaker. I have a 7 year old Carrier 19 Seer Unit. I don’t mind paying someone to fix the problem, but I don’t like paying someone to scratch their head. Is the unit simply undersized and has difficulty when temps drop to around 20F? Is something else cause the unit/heat pump not to run correctly? (such as low gas) If it is a defrost board issue, that would seem to be a simple fix – would this also cause the summer issue with reversing valve not working right when not by passed? high month ($200), I should be getting email in couple days to know for sure. The current Dec-Jan bill, I would estimate to be nearly double ( over $350 vs any prev. The house was built with a sunroom addition that is mostly glass might contribute to the problem. The other thing I considered is that the unit is similar undersized. I have to wonder if the defrost cycle is competing with the heat strips and that is why I get low delta for long periods.įirst, could the reversing valve problem be related to the heat performance issues? Could this indicate low gas? Could this be a Defrost board issue. (of course this is in part because heat rises). I know the Aux is on the majority of the time when cold on first floor, but not 2nd floor. The delta T on 2nd floor is normally slightly better when temps outside are above freezing. However, the delta T will rise briefly to 15-20. Measuring temps at the register vent with an infrared gun, will often show very low delta T (someone basically 0). During the day time the temp will recover to 68F. When outside temp dropped into the middle single #’s. When temps drop to mid teens it will not maintain 68F. When (outside) temps drop to around 20F, the unit will start to have trouble maintaining temp. The 2nd floor maintains temperature very well, even if set back is used. Winter 2017-18, here in Central NC, it has been much colder than typical of the area. My Electric bill was normal and comparable to previous summer. He tried may things and could not identify what was the issue, but when he jumpered the reversing valve (orange and red at the outside unit). First he blamed the thermostat, but when I explained I reversed the thermostats, back and forth the problem was also on the first floor and did not move he though it could be a wiring issue. The tech could not figure out why the reversing valve was not operating. This past summer (2016) the first floor (2ton) was blowing heat when in cooling mode. I once again called the company the installed the system and they once again told me there was nothing wrong with operation. It was late fall so I am not certain if it was before, after or during replacement of thermostats. Replaced basic thermostat with programable ones Fall 2016– same model on both floors. We only had one or two cold odd day Winter 2015-16. The first winter (before fuse blew), I called the company the installed the system and they told me there was nothing wrong with operation. Live in Winston-Salem area of North Carolina. (had several power outages around same time period). The issue seem to appear after the 3amp fuse blew. New Construction Home (2015) heated/cooled with Goodman 2-ton Heatpump first and 2.5 ton on second.
